Simply said, I love drawing them because they are beautiful. The intricacy of each feather, the amazing patterns and bright color combinations, the rough skin of their legs and feet reminding me of their dinosaur past, I never stop feeling awed and humbled by them. I love how birds are both delicate and powerful, sweet and ferocious, keen and distracted. They sing our cities to wakefulness, even on the dreariest morning in the worst part of town.

However, I also see birds as harbingers of humanity's ill deeds. Like the canary in the mine, their delicate nature lets us know when we have treated the environment callously. Crows falling from the sky because of pollution or pelicans coated in oil after a spill are unforgettable images and a clear sign that we need to change our behavior. Yet, ironically, birds symbolize hope and freedom. They are central in the mythology, symbolism and national pride of many cultures, but tend to be dismissed in reality. These contrasts interest me.

This series started at a New Year's Eve party. I wasn't planning to do a whole series, it was just for fun. And I certainly wasn't planning to spend two years drawing birds, nonetheless to exhibit them. But I have decided that doing something for the pure joy of it is often the best way to start any new venture.

I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed making them.
